What I have in common with the character in ‘Truman’ is this incredible need to please people. I feel like I want to take care of everyone and I also feel this terrible guilt if I am unable to. And I have felt this way ever since all this success started. The more tranquil a man becomes, the greater is his success, his influence, his power for good. Calmness of mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom. Success can make you go one of two ways. It can make you a prima donna – or it can smooth the edges, take away the insecurities, let the nice things come out. We can come to look upon the deaths of our enemies with as much regret as we feel for those of our friends, namely, when we miss their existence as witnesses to our success. Success in life comes not from holding a good hand, but in playing a poor hand well. Success comes when people act together failure tends to happen alone. No foreign policy – no matter how ingenious – has any chance of success if it is born in the minds of a few and carried in the hearts of none. I’d rather be a failure at something I love than a success at something I hate.
