We can come to look upon the deaths of our enemies with as much regret as we feel for those of our friends, namely, when we miss their existence as witnesses to our success. Success in life comes not from holding a good hand, but in playing a poor hand well. Success comes when people act together failure tends to happen alone. No foreign policy – no matter how ingenious – has any chance of success if it is born in the minds of a few and carried in the hearts of none.
